What Is Laughing Gas?
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a safe and effective sedative that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. It is one option your dentist may offer to make you more comfortable during certain procedures. It is not intended to put you to sleep. You can hear and respond to any requests or directions your dentist may have.
What Does It Feel Like?
Your dentist asks you to breathe normally through your nose, and within a few minutes you should start to feel the effects. You may feel light-headed, or notice a tingling or a heavy feeling in your arms and legs. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. The effects wear off soon after the mask is removed.
Other Sedation Options
We also offer sedation options beyond laughing gas for patients who need extra help to relax. Your dentist will talk with you about what is available and what suits you and your treatment. Tell us about your concerns when you book so we can plan ahead.
Who Might Benefit from Sedation?
- Patients with dental anxiety or fear
- People who find it hard to sit through longer appointments
- Those having treatments such as wisdom teeth removal, root canal treatment or implant work
- Anyone with a sensitive gag reflex
- Patients who have had difficult dental experiences in the past
Our Calm, Comfortable Approach
Sedation is only part of a relaxed visit. Our team explains each step, lets you set the pace and checks in with you throughout. You can read what patients feel about our approach on the Why Choose Heritage Valley Dental page.
Before Your Visit
- Tell us about your anxiety, past experiences and anything that makes you uneasy.
- Share your medical history, medications and allergies, and tell us if you are or may be pregnant.
- Follow any instructions we give you about eating or drinking before your visit.
- Ask whether laughing gas or another option is the best fit for your treatment.
- Arrange a ride if your dentist advises it for your type of sedation.
After Your Visit
- With laughing gas, the effects usually wear off soon after the mask is removed. Your dentist will tell you when you can resume normal activities.
- If you had a different type of sedation, follow the instructions you were given, and rest as advised.
- Keep any numbness in mind and avoid chewing until it passes.
- Call us if you feel unwell, dizzy or have any concern after your visit.
Questions to Ask About Sedation
- Which sedation option suits my treatment and my level of anxiety?
- How will I feel during and after the visit?
- Do I need someone to drive me home?
- Is there anything I should avoid eating, drinking or taking beforehand?
- How will sedation affect the cost of my treatment?
Talking to Our Team About Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety has many causes, from a bad past experience to fear of needles or noise, or simply not knowing what to expect. Telling us what worries you most helps us plan your visit. We can slow down, explain each step before it happens and agree on a signal to pause whenever you need a break. There is no judgement here, and you set the pace.
Costs, Insurance and Payment
Costs depend on the sedation option and the treatment. We provide free cost estimates before treatment, bill all major and government insurance plans directly where coverage applies and follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide. Instant financing with easy monthly payment plans is available.
