Dental Sealants for Children and Adults

Brushing and flossing are the best ways to help prevent cavities, but it is not always easy to clean every nook and cranny of your teeth, especially the back teeth you use to chew. Dental sealants add an extra layer of protection. At Heritage Valley Dental in South Edmonton we place sealants for children and adults in a quick, comfortable visit. If your child is getting their first permanent molars, or you want extra protection for your own teeth, ask our team whether sealants are a good option.

What Are Dental Sealants?

A sealant is a thin, protective coating, made from plastic or other dental materials, that bonds to the chewing surface of your back teeth. Molars are rough and uneven, and they are a favourite place for leftover food and cavity-causing bacteria to hide. Sealants are no substitute for brushing and flossing, but they can keep cavities from forming and may even stop early decay from becoming a full cavity.

How Do Sealants Work?

Think of sealants as raincoats for your teeth. When the bacteria that live in everyone's mouth meet leftover food particles, they produce acids that can create holes in teeth, which are cavities. A sealant keeps food out and stops bacteria and acid from settling on the tooth, just as a raincoat keeps you dry in a storm.

Who Can Get Sealants?

Children and adults can both benefit from sealants, but the earlier you get them, the better. Your first molars appear around age 6, and second molars break through around age 12. Sealing these teeth soon after they come in can help keep them cavity-free from the start, which can save time and money in the long run. Ask your dentist whether sealants are a good option for you and your family.

How Are Sealants Applied?

Applying a sealant is a quick and gentle process.

  1. Your dentist cleans and dries the tooth.
  2. A gel is placed on the tooth to roughen the surface so the sealant bonds strongly.
  3. After a few seconds, the gel is rinsed off and the tooth is dried again.
  4. The sealant is applied to the grooves of the tooth.
  5. A special blue light hardens the sealant.

Can Sealants Be Placed Over Early Decay?

Sealants can be used over areas of early decay to help prevent further damage. Because some sealants are clear, your dentist can keep an eye on the tooth to make sure the sealant is doing its job.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants often last for several years before they need to be reapplied. At your regular dental visits, your dentist will check the condition of the sealants and can replace them as needed.

Before Your Visit

  • Brush and floss as usual before the appointment.
  • Tell your child what to expect. The visit is short, and sealants do not involve drilling.
  • Let us know about any allergies, since an allergy is the only known reason sealants may not be suitable.
  • Bring your insurance or benefit information.

After Your Visit

  • You can usually eat and drink as normal once you leave, unless your dentist advises otherwise.
  • Keep brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces, but not the spaces between teeth.
  • Avoid chewing very hard or sticky foods that could lift or chip a sealant.
  • Keep up with regular checkups so your dentist can check the sealants.
  • Call us if a sealant feels rough, chipped or loose.
