Safe Amalgam Filling Removal and Replacement

Many people still have amalgam (silver) fillings from years past. As long as these restorations are intact, they can stay in your mouth. However, silver fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we respect our patients' wishes to replace them with natural-looking, tooth-coloured restorations. At Heritage Valley Dental in South Edmonton, our dentists can examine your fillings, explain your options and help you decide whether to replace them and when.

When Should Silver Fillings Be Replaced?

  • The filling is broken or cracked. Broken or cracked amalgam fillings can weaken the tooth and lead to extensive decay, so they should be replaced as soon as possible.
  • There is new decay around the filling. Decay can form at the edge of an old filling.
  • You want a more natural look. Replacing visible silver fillings with tooth-coloured ones is a common cosmetic choice.
  • The filling is very large. A large silver filling may be better replaced with an inlay or onlay for added protection.

If your silver fillings are intact and healthy, they do not have to be replaced. Your dentist will check them at your regular checkups and advise you.

Replacing a Silver Filling with a Tooth-Coloured Restoration

Depending on how much decay is present, replacing a silver filling with a composite restoration usually takes one visit. During the visit we remove the old filling and any decay, then fill your tooth with a resin-based composite, which is BPA free and matches your natural teeth. Composite fillings are bonded to your tooth and mimic the qualities of natural teeth. Read more on our tooth-coloured fillings page.

When a Large Silver Filling Needs More Than a Filling

When a cavity is very large, a significant part of the tooth has broken away, or we are replacing a very large silver filling, porcelain inlays are a more appropriate treatment than composite fillings. Inlays give extra protection to the remaining tooth structure and look natural. This process requires two appointments. If a tooth is badly damaged, your dentist may also talk to you about a crown.

Before Your Visit

  • Bring a list of your existing fillings and any previous dental records, if you have them.
  • Tell us about any medications, allergies or health conditions.
  • Write down your questions or concerns about replacing your fillings.
  • Let us know if you are anxious. We offer laughing gas and sedation options.
  • Bring your insurance information, if you have it.

After Your Treatment

  • Your mouth may be numb for a few hours. Avoid chewing until the numbness has gone, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.
  • Teeth can be sensitive to hot, cold and pressure for a short time.
  • Brush twice a day and floss daily.
  • If you have a temporary inlay, avoid sticky or hard foods until the final restoration is placed.
  • Call us if your bite feels uneven, sensitivity gets worse, or you have swelling, fever, lasting pain or bleeding.

What to Ask Your Dentist About Your Fillings

  • Are any of my silver fillings cracked, worn or leaking at the edges?
  • Is there decay under or around any filling?
  • Would a filling, an inlay or a crown be best for each tooth?
  • Should I replace several fillings at once or one at a time?
  • What will the cost be, and what will my insurance cover?

Why Intact Fillings Are Checked, Not Always Replaced

Taking out a sound filling removes some healthy tooth along with it, so replacement is not always the right choice. At your checkups, your dentist looks at each filling and the tooth around it. If a filling is intact and the tooth is healthy, it can stay. If it is cracked, worn or has decay around it, we will talk about replacing it before it causes bigger problems.
