Why Regular Checkups Matter
Your mouth is the doorway to your body, and healthy teeth and gums are an important part of your overall health and well-being. Regular visits, including cleanings and assessments by our hygienist, help prevent gum disease and tooth decay and let us catch changes early. Many dental problems, including gum disease, can progress without pain, so you may not know about them until they have advanced. Your dentist and hygienist are best placed to detect the early stages, when treatment is easiest.
What Happens at a Dental Checkup and Cleaning
- A complete oral exam: We check your teeth, gums, jaw and bite for decay, gum problems and other conditions, including TMJ and muscle-related concerns.
- Oral cancer screening: Every complete exam includes an oral cancer screening for added peace of mind.
- Digital x-rays when needed: X-rays can show cavities, bone problems and other issues that are hard to see with the eye. Read more about our digital dental x-rays.
- Professional cleaning: Our hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing cannot reach.
- Fluoride: Fluoride helps strengthen teeth and prevent decay, and your dentist may recommend fluoride treatments or fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash.
- A personalized plan: We explain what we find and build a home-care and recall plan around your needs.
Gum Health
Gum disease begins when soft plaque and hard tartar build up on the teeth. Without good care the bacteria can inflame the gums, which is called gingivitis. Blood on your toothbrush or floss is one of the earliest signs. When caught early, gingivitis can be reversed with a professional cleaning and good home care. If it is left untreated it can progress to periodontitis. If you notice bleeding, swelling or tenderness, see our page on gum disease treatment.
Everyday Habits That Protect Your Teeth
- Brush twice a day and floss daily.
- Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. If you consume them regularly, brush and floss more often.
- Ask your dentist whether a fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash is right for you.
- Keep up with regular visits. A checkup and cleaning about every six months is a general guide, and your dentist will recommend the schedule that fits your own oral health.
Before Your Visit
- Bring your insurance information, if you have it, and a photo ID.
- Make a note of any medications you take and any allergies or health conditions.
- Write down questions or concerns, such as sensitivity, bleeding gums or a tooth that feels different.
- Brush and floss as usual. If you feel embarrassed about doing it before your exam, there is no need. We are here to help.
- Let us know if you feel anxious so we can make your visit as comfortable as possible.
After Your Visit
- Your teeth may feel a little sensitive for a short time after a deep cleaning. This is common.
- Keep brushing twice daily and flossing every day.
- Follow any home-care advice from your dentist or hygienist.
- Book your next recall visit before you leave so it is not forgotten.
- Call us if you have lasting pain, bleeding that does not stop, swelling or a fever.
