Porcelain Veneers in South Edmonton

A veneer is a thin, durable shell made of porcelain that your dentist bonds to the front of a tooth. Veneers can reshape, brighten and even out your smile, and they are one of the most versatile cosmetic treatments available. At Heritage Valley Dental in South Edmonton, we help you decide whether veneers are right for you, explain every step and provide a free estimate before treatment begins.

What Can Veneers Correct?

Veneers can be used to correct many of the same issues as cosmetic bonding, including:

  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Discoloured or stained teeth
  • Misshapen or uneven teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth

They can also be placed over slightly crooked or overlapping teeth to create the appearance of straighter teeth, which normally takes a year or more with braces. Veneers are also meant to last longer than cosmetic bonding. If your main goal is to straighten teeth, ask about Invisalign as an alternative.

How Are Veneers Placed?

Veneer treatment usually takes more than one visit.

  1. Consultation and planning: Your dentist listens to your goals, examines your teeth and discusses the look you want. Our Digital Smile Design planning can help you preview a result.
  2. Preparing the teeth: Your dentist gently buffs away a small portion of the enamel on the teeth being treated, to create room for the porcelain veneers.
  3. Impression: An impression of your teeth is taken and sent to a dental lab, where a skilled technician creates your veneers to the size, colour and shape you have chosen.
  4. Temporary veneers: You may be given temporary veneers to wear while the permanent ones are made.
  5. Bonding: When the veneers return from the lab, your dentist affixes them to your teeth with a strong bonding material.

Veneers or Bonding?

Both treatments can improve the look of a tooth. Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin applied directly to the tooth, often in a single visit, while veneers are made in a lab from porcelain. Veneers are meant to last longer than bonding. Your dentist can help you weigh the options. See our page on cosmetic bonding.

  • Call us if a veneer feels loose or chipped, your bite feels uneven, or you have swelling, fever, lasting pain or bleeding.

Caring for Your Veneers

  • Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush and floss daily.
  • Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens or fingernails.
